Black Men’s Wellness Day in Houston is being dedicated to the life and legacy of its city’s icon Michael “5000” Watts, the legendary DJ, producer, and co-founder of Swishahouse Records.

“Michael ‘5000’ Watts was a cultural force in Houston whose impact extended far beyond music,” said Dr. Donnell Cooper, Houston executive director of AAMWA. “We honor his legacy through Black Men’s Wellness Day, guided by our message ‘Get Checked Out, Not Checked In,’ and are reminded of the urgent need for Black men to prioritize their health.”

Watts, a music pioneer deeply rooted in the community, died in January from torsades de pointes, a rare and dangerous heart rhythm disorder. His passing made many reflect on his impact on Houston’s culture and music, but for his wife, Tammie, his legacy lives in the man she knew at home.

Beyond his public impact, she says Watts was becoming increasingly intentional about his health and encouraging others to do the same.

That shift marked a new chapter, focusing on wellness, growth, and self-assurance.

Black Men’s Wellness Day is hosted by AAMWA and will take place Saturday, April 25, at The Community of Faith Church.

Tammie says the recognition of her husband’s legacy means more than words can express.

The free community event will feature a 5K run/walk, health screenings, fitness activities, vendors, live entertainment, and family-friendly programming. Grammy-nominated artist, actor, and wellness advocate David Banner is scheduled to participate.

Tammie hopes Black men in Houston will love themselves enough to prioritize their health for themselves and their families.
