AAMWA Receives Grant Award to Expand RMRT Mental Wellness Initiative

Youngstown, OH — The African American Male Wellness Agency (AAMWA) is pleased to announce it has received grant funding from the Western Reserve Health Foundation Valley, a supporting organization of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, to support and expand its Real Men Real Talk (RMRT) Mental Wellness Initiative.

RMRT is a community-based mental wellness program designed to reduce stigma, foster healing dialogue, and connect individuals to culturally responsive mental health resources. Grounded in AAMWA’s message to “Get Checked Out, Not Checked In,” the initiative encourages individuals to prioritize their mental health proactively, seeking support before reaching a crisis point. This investment will strengthen AAMWA’s capacity to increase access to mental wellness services, expand community-centered programming, and further address the critical mental health needs.

“We are deeply grateful to the Western Reserve Health Foundation and the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley for their partnership and shared commitment to advancing health, healing, and community well-being,” said John-Michael Oliver, Executive Director of AAMWA. “This support allows us to continue meeting people where they are and reinforcing a simple but powerful message, Get Checked Out, Not Checked In.

Together, these efforts advance AAMWA’s mission to strengthen individuals, build healthier families, and foster more resilient communities.
