AAMWA Featured in Rolling Out for Their Work in Detroit

Featured in Rolling Out, The African American Male Wellness Agency (AAMWA) brought its national health initiative to Detroit with two major events focused on improving the well-being of Black men and their families. The effort began with Real Men Real Talk, a powerful discussion led by entertainer and activist David Banner, addressing mental health and the unique pressures Black men face. This event set the stage for Black Men’s Wellness Day at Perfecting Church, chaired by Bishop Marvin Winans, where more than 1,000 attendees received free health screenings, mental health resources, and participated in a community 5K walk-run. The event transformed the church grounds into a full-service wellness hub, emphasizing the importance of early detection, prevention, and community connection in tackling health disparities.

AAMWA’s work in Detroit highlights a growing movement to combat the disproportionate rates of preventable diseases affecting African American men. By partnering with trusted community institutions and combining education, entertainment, and medical services, AAMWA breaks through barriers of access, mistrust, and stigma that have long hindered preventative care. The family-oriented nature of the events fosters a culture of wellness that spans generations, promoting long-term change in attitudes toward health. As the organization continues its national tour—with the next stop in Los Angeles—its model serves as a blueprint for empowering communities nationwide to take control of their health and redefine what wellness looks like for Black men.
